Radiococo will now be broadcasting from Gothenburg, Sweden 🇸🇪! I am here for the next 2 years, pursuing my MFA in Child Culture Design. I found out about this programme sometime in March/April 2022, in time for my existential 29th birthday. I was ready to move on from my 3 years in Japan, and was deciding whether or not there was a programme out there worthy enough to return to being a full-time student. I literally googled “Masters design children play” and found what looked like a program designed for me.
The rest of 2022 was spent preparing to return to Singapore, University applications and Scholarship applications. Then, the first half of 2023 was spent waiting, manifesting and preparing for scholarship interviews. I didn’t even know if I would be able to make it here until 2 months ago. Then I packed up and whizzed off, trying to process the 11 months I spent in Singapore learning, growing and working on relationships. Which also explains the couple of missed broadcasts.
I got here on the trust and love of so many people I have worked with; my work and scholarship award are a testament to their support and belief that I can push harder and dig deeper with my work with kids. They are the same people who also believe in the power of kids and saw how and why this work is important to me.
During the interviews, I was questioned repeatedly, “why children?” “why now?” “is it just education?” and I was briefly frustrated that they had to ask. I forgot that the answer is not immediately apparent for those who do not work with kids. In retrospect, I also realised that they want to hear it from me, beyond my work and letter of intent. I reiterated how much we can learn from kids, how crucial it is to make space for their voice and being, and I summarised with how the work for/with them is also for myself with a quote (that I unfortunately forgot where the original is from):
“When we nurture a child, we won’t have to repair an adult”
I’m so excited about this new adventure. Thank you for journeying with me!
