They say your life flashes before you when you are about to die, but they don’t tell you that the same happens when you close a chapter in your life too.
I write this as I stand on the balcony of a ryokan in Asakusa, a neighbourhood unfamiliar to me in a city I called home for 3 years. I highly recommend being at a vantage point that allows you to see a bird’s eye view of your city occasionally—nothing like a bit of distance to see and hear things better.
It feels unreal to leave now, having planted and grown so many seedlings of connections with our partners, freelancers, and especially with the kids. But, it really takes a cessation of something to help you realise the enormity of it all and how at Saturday Kids, the people really make the product. I don’t share this on here often enough, but as I think about the work we do for and with the kids, I think about the team behind this. The core team and our family of incredibly diverse instructors we had in Tokyo, held together by the common love of knowledge sharing with the kids and the desire to invest in our future. Each of us represents a different country on the globe, and by way of fate and a little magic, we found ourselves in Saturday Kids Japan for a brief time in our lives. Our little family of instructors were also half the inspiration behind this newsletter. I wanted to remind them about the importance of our work and how much power we collectively have to shape the present.
I’m not sure what else will grow from these connections, but I look forward to seeing it bear fruit.
For now, I’ll prepare for a new season of learning and doing, just as this city prepares for autumn’s arrival. As my kiddo once said:
Thank you for tuning in this month!
