I caught up with my 10-year-old cousin over pokemon cards this month. I'm currently at a crossroads in my life, and I thought about what my cousin might see in his future. So I casually asked:
I probably asked him this question when he was much younger. Although I no longer remember his response then, I am sure this was completely new. And true. While pondering the next steps in my work, I was so fixated on just doing and being one thing when I know I enjoy doing many different things. I realised too, then my line of questioning implied that there was only one choice, that one can only be one thing, fixed and unchanging. But how untrue that is! There are many ways to be and many things to do, and they don't always fit into one little job description. So perhaps the better thing to ask was: What do you want to do/ try in the future?
I know my stress on one thing/ job comes from practical reasons governing our society. One where consistency and single focus are rewarded with comfort and security. And how appealing security is once you have had a taste of it! It affords you certain freedoms to choose and everyone should be able to make their own choices. But this conversation reminded me that the spirit of curiosity is in doing and trying, and while I still can (physically and financially), I will keep doing and trying.
Thank you! for tuning in this month! Tell me, if you are also at an intersection in your life 🥲
